Second Edition, First Issue (see bibliography Todd & Bowden 206Ab] ) not originally designated as a 'second edition') immediately issued after the publication of the First Edition, Edinburgh 1827.

Book is very good and bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Former owner's signature on the fly-leaf of both volumes. Titled and heavily decorated in gilt to spine panels. Some chipping to extremities, cosmetic edgewear, some rubbing to the boards, nevertheless strong solid and handsome. Pages are bright with just some odd spots.Light tidemark to the preliminary leaves and half-title of Vol. 1.  Bound with half titles.  An  extremly attractive and scarce set.

FYI: Scott did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827. So the author in this book is mentioned as 'Author of Waverley, Guy Mannering and The Antiquary'. In the introduction of Vol. 1 of 'Chronicles of the Canongate' Walter Scott laid aside his incognito.
